Would Universal Healthcare Really Work in the U.S.?

Pretty much every rich, developed nation on the planet has universal healthcare, EXCEPT for the U.S. Should we join them, or does our current healthcare system have advantages that we don’t want to lose?

**How does healthcare work in the U.S.?
In the U.S., how you want to pay for healthcare is entirely up to you, as long as you have the money. Most people choose to buy health insurance. If you’re low income or over 65, you can get it from the government, but pretty much everyone else has to buy it from companies. You pay a set amount of money every month, and in return, the insurance company pays for most of your medical bills if you get sick or hurt. You can also choose to NOT buy insurance. If you’re young and healthy and never have to go to a doctor or a hospital, you’re gonna save money. But you’re at risk for paying a LOT of money if you DO have a medical emergency, like a car wreck or falling off your bike and breaking your arm. So, it’s a gamble.

**So how does universal healthcare work?**
There are a BUNCH of different ways to get universal healthcare, and every country does it a little bit differently. There’s SOCIALIZED MEDICINE, where the government owns the hospitals, and the doctors and nurses are government employees. There is SINGLE-PAYER, where doctors and hospitals are private businesses, but there is almost no private insurance. Instead, the government provides health insurance for everyone. It can also work with PRIVATE INSURANCE, where people buy it from companies, but it’s HEAVILY regulated by the government, which REQUIRES everyone to have health insurance.

**What are the pros with universal healthcare?**
With universal healthcare, everyone is covered, your insurance isn’t tied to your job, and it would cost less

**What are the cons?**
Taxes would likely go up to pay for it, the quality of care might change, and the individual would have less choice.

True cost of US healthcare shocks the British public

In the UK, an ambulance callout costs you £0 in medical bills. The birth of your child costs you £0 in medical bills. In the USA, it’s a different story.

We asked members of the public to guess how much they’d have to pay for simple medical services in America, and what they think about the NHS.

Healthcare is not a right, it’s just a good idea.

Yes, I’m aware that we’re still in the primaries, so each candidtate is trying to appeal to their party’s base as much as possible, but I think this rhetoric is doing more harm than good, especially when there are clearer, less morally-charged ways of explaining your position on healthcare.

And yes, part of the motivation for this video is simply to test out my new lighting and background. What do you think?

Could Your Healthcare Will Vanish if GOP Succeeds?

Republicans are working to dismantle Obamacare.

The Affordable Care Act is in court again as the GOP is working to take away your healthcare on constitutional grounds. Some have pointed out that the argument is a weak one but Donald Trump has been packing the court with right wing judges.

Will Obamacare survive the latest attack by the GOP and Republicans or will the insurance companies win?

Why the cost of healthcare varies so much | ABC News

Depending on where you live, your treatment could be free or cost hundreds of dollars.

Different countries choose to approach health care in different ways. But one thing a lot of them have in common is that they provide universal coverage. That means all their citizens have access to healthcare.

Should countries be spending more to help the poor access healthcare? The US spends the most on healthcare as a share of the economy and per capita, but it’s ranked low on both life expectancy and infant mortality rates. The private sector is what drives up costs in the US, because the country doesn’t have universal health coverage.

Countries like Cuba and the UK spend less on healthcare as part of the economy, and they also have relatively better outcomes. But the UK also controls access to drugs in the country, which means certain treatments aren’t available because they haven’t been deemed cost-effective.
