Why Does the U.S. Spend So Much on Healthcare? High, High Prices.

American healthcare spending is still WAY higher than pretty much all other industrialized countries. But not that long ago, things were different. The US didn’t spend nearly as much in this realm. What changed? Demographics? More sickness? Nah. Spoiler alert, prices have risen much, much faster than the rate of inflation. We’ve got a few suggestions for getting it under control.

This video was adapted from a column Aaron and Austin Frakt wrote for the Upshot. Links to further reading can be found there: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/02/upshot/us-health-care-expensive-country-comparison.html

How to Change Healthcare: Michael Goldsby at TEDxChapmanU

Described as “an innovative scientist with the pragmatism of a business entrepreneur,” Michael Goldsby, Ph.D., counts more than 20 years in the commercial software industry. During those decades, he successfully co-founded four startups, held leadership positions with organizations as varied as Disney, Veritas Scientific and Qualcomm, and earned multiple software innovation awards.

Currently, Goldsby is co-founder and chief technology officer of Jointly Health, an innovative new software company that provides an advanced analytics platform for the healthcare industry. His academic works—and his passion—have provided new insights into nonlinear dynamic systems by applying unique distributed machine learning techniques to real-time sensor data combined with traditional data sources.

Over the last decade he has dedicated himself to health informatics research, investigating the intersection of translational bioinformatics with “new health data.” His doctoral work explored the use of distributed analytics for application in ultra-scale sensing. Goldsby holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Value in Healthcare – A Case for Change

Despite the tremendous progress health systems and clinical research have achieved, the quality and cost of care delivered around the world are sub-optimal and highly variable. An estimated 30% of the $7-8 trillion we spend globally on health care is considered wasted. There is growing momentum towards transforming today’s health care systems into “Value-Based Health Care (VBHC) Systems.” These patient stories contrast our current health systems with a VBHC system where all stakeholders are aligned on the definition of success: delivering outcomes that matter to patients at the lowest cost.

Produced by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group – as part of the Value in Healthcare Project – this movie was premiered on January 19, 2017 in Davos, Switzerland as part of the World Economic Forum’s 2017 Annual Meeting.

Olivier Oullier, PhD, Member of the Executive Committee & Head of Strategy, Global Health and Healthcare, World Economic Forum
Stefan Larsson, MD, PhD, Senior Partner and Managing Director, The Boston Consulting Group
