Democratic candidates debate health care and Medicare-for-all

Democratic candidates take the stage for the ninth primary debate of the 2020 presidential election, this one in Nevada. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg makes his debate debut, as Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders takes the lead in the polls.

Bloomberg took a beating from his rivals on Wednesday at the very start.

The harshest attack came from Warren, who said Bloomberg was a “billionaire who calls women ‘fat broads’ and ‘horse-faced lesbians.’”

“And no, I’m not talking about Donald Trump, I’m talking about Mayor Bloomberg,” Warren said, prompting gasps from the audience.

Sanders also went after Bloomberg, saying the stop-and-frisk policing policy that Bloomberg oversaw as mayor “went after African American and Latino people in an outrageous way. That is not a way you are going to grow voter turnout.”

Bloomberg responded that Sanders’ proposed “Medicare for All” health-care overhaul was no way to build a broad coalition.

“You don’t start out by saying I’ve got 160 million people, I’m going to start taking away the insurance policy they love,” he said.

“If he goes and is the candidate, we will have Donald Trump for another four years, and we can’t stand that.”

Access to Insurance Doesn’t Guarantee Access to Care

Many are still unhappy with Obamacare. The main intent of the Affordable Care Act was to expand the safety net (Medicaid), regulate the non-employer-based private insurance market (the insurance exchanges) and help people buy that insurance (subsidies) in order to reduce the number of Americans who are uninsured. On those metrics, it appears to be succeeding.

First and foremost, Obamacare was about improving access to health care. While it did improve access to insurance, in many, many other ways the United States is falling short. Things are likely to get worse before they get better. That’s the topic of this week’s Healthcare Triage.

This episode was adapted from a column I wrote for the Upshot. Links to references and further reading can be found there: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/25/upshot/why-the-us-still-trails-many-wealthy-nations-in-access-to-care.html

Treating Canada’s Health Care System

When Dr. Danielle Martin spoke before a U.S. Senate subcommittee a few years ago, she taught Americans a thing or two about universal health coverage. Her defence of Canada’s health-care system made Canadians proud and dispelled some myths Americans may have believed about socialized medicine. But there’s more to Danielle Martin than just being a staunch defender of Medicare. She is also a pragmatist who works both sides of the health-care system: she’s a clinician at a general family practice at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, as well as the hospital’s vice-president. She joins The Agenda to discuss her new book, “Better Now: Six Big Ideas to Improve Health Care for All Canadians.”

Obamacare and October 1st: Healthcare Triage #1

http://www.healthcare.gov

Healthcare Triage is a new series from Dr. Aaron Carroll and the team behind Crash Course and Mental Floss Videos. In this episode, Aaron gets a visit from noted hypochondriac John Green, and allays some of his fears about Obamacare. He provides an overview of what is going to happen on October 1st, when the Affordable Care Act, AKA Obamacare, goes into effect. Aaron will talk stuff like individual mandates, subsidies, and the three-legged stool of Obamacare, which is not a real stool. You’ll learn who exactly is affected by the changes on October 1st, get a brief tour of healthcare.gov, and learn a little about alien alternative medicine, which also isn’t even real. The rest of the video is totally real. All this, plus the aforementioned metaphorical furniture should make this pretty hard to resist.
