Health Care Reform, and the Issues We Face

As we approach the election this fall, it seems like the news media report on little else. Unfortunately, too little news coverage addresses health care reform. That’s wackadoo, because there is still so much to be done to improve the cost, quality, and access for patients within the US health care system.

So let’s talk about the major health policy issues we in the US face. This is Healthcare Triage News.

This episode was adapted from a post Aaron wrote for the JAMA Forum. Links to further reading and sources can be found there: https://newsatjama.jama.com/2016/09/21/jama-forum-re-engaging-in-health-care-reform/

This time on the Healthcare Triage Podcast, we’re talking about what exactly a nurse practitioner does. And what better way to learn about the gig than to talk to a nurse practitioner? Aimee Carroll joins us this week to tell us about what nurse practitioners do, and the liminal space they occupy between the roles of nurses and doctors. We’ll also answer your questions, and talk about the latest on taxes and healthcare, and the big news this week about the so-called forbidden words in government health bureaucracy.

Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, and Their Health Care Proposals

We’ve got an election coming up here. It’s pretty much a dumpster fire. But we’ve still got a country to run, and a health care system that’s far from ideal. There are two main candidates, two main health care reform plans, and we’re going to break them down and discuss them. That’s the topic of this week’s Healthcare Triage.

And make sure to tune in to Healthcare Triage LIVE this Wednesday at 11:30 AM Eastern, where we’ll take all your questions on this topic.

Why China can provide 1.4 billion people with healthcare coverage

Chinese hospitals treat about 8 billion patients per year. To tackle the global challenge posed by medical insurance, China firmly believes that “an all-around moderately prosperous society cannot be achieved without the people’s all-around health. Public health should be given priority in the country’s development strategy.” Check out this video and have a look why China can provide 1.4 billion people with healthcare coverage.

RAND and the Moral Hazard: Healthcare Triage #10

As we’ve explained in previous episodes, insurance is complicated. Even John gets confused (watch the video!). But there’s a reason we have all these deductibles, co-pays, and co-insurance. It’s because of the moral hazard, and a very important research study known as the RAND Health Insurance Experiment. Watch this episode and learn all about it.

Make sure you subscribe above so you don’t miss any upcoming episodes!

Here’s more info on the RAND HIE: http://theincidentaleconomist.com/wordpress/the-moral-hazard/

Why Can’t America Have a Grown-Up Healthcare Conversation?

In which John discusses the tradeoffs involved in health care reform, and why the 70% of Americans who are happy with their personal health care make it difficult to achieve more than incremental changes in the very expensive, very inefficient health care system in the United States. SOURCES:

First off, subscribe to Healthcare Triage, where this stuff is discussed with far more detail and nuance: https://www.youtube.com/user/thehealthcaretriage

Only 32% of Americans think our healthcare system is good or excellent, but 69% are happy with their personal health care: http://www.gallup.com/poll/165998/americans-views-healthcare-quality-cost-coverage.aspx

Over at the incidental economist, Aaron Carroll and Austin Frakt have written a LOT about the quality of U.S. healthcare outcomes compared to other countries. Intros here: http://theincidentaleconomist.com/wordpress/the-state-of-us-health-aint-so-good/ and here: http://theincidentaleconomist.com/wordpress/how-do-we-rate-the-quality-of-the-us-health-care-system-introduction/

The Kaiser Foundation has up-to-date stats on where people get their health insurance–the ACA exchanges get coverage to about 6% of people, 49% of people get coverage through their employers (or their family’s employer), 20% through Medicaid, 14% through Medicare, and 9% are uninfured: http://kff.org/other/state-indicator/total-population/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D

Healthcare costs in the U.S. are very, very high compared to every other wealthy country, and have been for decades: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care_in_the_United_States#Overall_costs

A Medicare-for-All program would lead to lower overall healthcare costs in the U.S., but also a lot of job loss (possibly as many as two million): http://money.cnn.com/2016/01/25/news/economy/sanders-health-care-plan/

Even modest reductions in health insurance subsidies–like those proposed in the GOP repeal and replace of the Affordable Care Act–would lead to tens of millions of people losing insurance coverage: https://www.cbo.gov/publication/52371

Other topics discussed include the Republican plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, the relative modesty of Obamacare as a health care reform, and the benefits and tradeoffs of Bernie Sanders’ proposed single payer healthcare system, Medicare for All.

The Healthcare System of France

We’ve covered the United States and Canada. today, we cross the Atlantic to discuss the healthcare System in France. Their system is a combination of universal social insurance with some optional private overlays. It’s expensive (relative to most), but it’s arguably the best in the world. Watch and learn why.
