The US Health Care System Needs Immigrants

By any objective measure, the United States doesn’t train enough medical doctors to meet the nation’s needs. That means graduates from other countries are needed. Aaron takes a look at foreign medical graduates, an essential element of America’s health care system.

This episode was adapted from a column Aaron wrote for the Upshot. Links to further reading and sources can be found there: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/06/upshot/america-is-surprisingly-reliant-on-foreign-medical-graduates.html

Designing the healthcare provider of the future: Chad Priest at TEDxIndianapolis

Chad Priest talks about his perspective as a healthcare provider in multiple professions: as a military nurse, a healthcare lawyer, university faculty member and most recently as the CEO of a non-profit crisis management organization. Through these experiences, he has come to believe that in order to create health you have to mix it up. Mix up the professions and the interactions. Priest is a dad, a husband, a nurse, an attorney, an Air Force veteran and the CEO of the MESH Coalition, an emergency management organization. But if you ask him, he’ll just tell you he’s a healthcare provider on a mission to change the way we think about healthcare and who provides it. To create health, we must mix it up: crossing professions and cross-pollinating solutions that lead to breakthrough thinking.

The Impact of Residential Schools on Aboriginal Healthcare | Dawn Tisdale | TEDxComoxValley

Dawn talks about residential schools and their impact on the people and their family’s who were involved. She passionately makes a plea for a link between what residential school survivors experienced, and how their future healthcare needs have to match the impacts of that experience.

Dawn Tisdale is a third year student obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at North Island College. Dawn grew up in Montreal, moved to the island in 2000, and became a community support worker for adults with disabilities. Wanting to further explore her career in health care, she decided to go back to school to become an RN. Since entering the BSN program, Dawn has become extremely passionate about nursing – aboriginal health, in particular. What fuels her fire is social justice and advocacy for health promotion.

Dawn was recently elected president of the Canadian Nursing Student Association, representing 28,000 nursing students across Canada.
