The US Health Care System Needs Immigrants

By any objective measure, the United States doesn’t train enough medical doctors to meet the nation’s needs. That means graduates from other countries are needed. Aaron takes a look at foreign medical graduates, an essential element of America’s health care system.

This episode was adapted from a column Aaron wrote for the Upshot. Links to further reading and sources can be found there: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/06/upshot/america-is-surprisingly-reliant-on-foreign-medical-graduates.html

Aaron’s guest this month is Dr. Bernice Pescosolido, who is a medical sociologist at Indiana University. Dr. Pescosolido studies the environments, neighborhoods, and connections that contribute to patients’ identities, and looks how this social fabric works or doesn’t work for some people. Particularly, Dr. Pescosolido studies the rising suicide rates in the United States, and tries to track the pathways that have led victims to suicide. She also studies what kind of social factors contribute to how patients come into contact with (or don’t manage to engage with) the medical system.

The Healthcare Triage podcast is sponsored by Indiana University School of Medicine whose mission is to advance health in the state of Indiana and beyond by promoting innovation and excellence in education, research and patient care.

IU School of Medicine is leading Indiana University’s first grand challenge, the Precision Health Initiative, with bold goals to cure multiple myeloma, triple negative breast cancer and childhood sarcoma and prevent type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

WATCH: Trump signs executive order on health care price transparency

President Donald Trump signs an executive order June 24 that aims to force hospitals to disclose the costs of health care services. The order directs the Department of Health and Human Services to issue a new rule that mandates hospitals reveal the price of procedures in a “patient-friendly” format. Trump also aims to require health care providers tell patients upfront what their out-of-pocket costs will be based on their individual insurance coverage.

Why Does the U.S. Spend So Much on Healthcare? High, High Prices.

American healthcare spending is still WAY higher than pretty much all other industrialized countries. But not that long ago, things were different. The US didn’t spend nearly as much in this realm. What changed? Demographics? More sickness? Nah. Spoiler alert, prices have risen much, much faster than the rate of inflation. We’ve got a few suggestions for getting it under control.

This video was adapted from a column Aaron and Austin Frakt wrote for the Upshot. Links to further reading can be found there: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/02/upshot/us-health-care-expensive-country-comparison.html
