Is 50 Really the New 30? Your Immune System May Not Think So | Business Wire

CHICAGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The American Lung Association in partnership with Pfizer announces the

launch of WHO PNEU?™, a public awareness campaign encouraging

Baby Boomers and older Gen X-ers to recognize their personal risk for

pneumococcal pneumonia — a serious lung disease1 that can be

spread by coughing and sneezing.2 An estimated quarter of a

million US adults over 50 are hospitalized each year with pneumococcal

pneumonia.3,4

On behalf of Pfizer and the American Lung Association, Harris Poll

conducted a telephone survey of 1000 U.S. adults aged 50 to 75. Findings

from this survey showed that 85 percent of respondents think people 50

and older are at risk for pneumococcal pneumonia, but only 1 in 2 (50

percent) agree they are personally at risk.5

“While many of us over 50 may act and feel younger, the truth is our

immune system naturally weakens with age, putting us at increased risk

for infectious diseases. With WHO PNEU?, we are providing a

wake-up call for these adults to talk to their doctors and see if they

are up to date on their vaccinations,” said Harold P. Wimmer, National

President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Lung Association.

Starting this fall, WHO PNEU? will roll out a national PSA

(public service announcement) campaign on television, radio and print,

featuring actor, director, producer and philanthropist Tim Daly.

“Some people think you have to be elderly and in the hospital to get

pneumococcal pneumonia, but that’s not so,” said Freda Lewis-Hall, MD,

Chief Medical Officer of Pfizer. “Anyone can get pneumococcal pneumonia

anywhere and at any time, and the risk increases after we turn 50.6

It’s also important to understand that pneumococcal pneumonia can be a

really serious condition and shouldn’t be taken lightly.”

Daly, 59, who currently stars as Henry McCord in the CBS hit series Madam

Secretary, and is well known for his lead TV roles in The Sopranos,

Private Practice and Wings, knows firsthand about the risk

of pneumococcal pneumonia. His mom was hospitalized with the disease for

over a week in 1991.

“At first, my mom thought she had a bad cold, but the second I saw her I

knew something was seriously wrong. She looked horrible. She was very

weak and pale, and struggling to breathe,” said Daly, recounting the day

he visited his mom and then decided to drive her straight to the

hospital emergency room. “The experience with my mom really scared me

because she got really sick.”

Now in his 50s, Tim is more cognizant of his health. By joining forces

with WHO PNEU? he hopes to drive greater awareness of personal

risk for pneumococcal pneumonia among his peers, beginning with a

preview of the campaign survey results that offer a glimpse into what

adults 50 to 75 are thinking about the disease, such as:

  • Only about half of adults 50 to 75 (53%) surveyed understand that

pneumococcal pneumonia does not only affect the very young and

elderly. In fact, anyone can get pneumococcal pneumonia anywhere and

at any time, and the risk increases as they get older.5

  • Survey results showed that a majority of respondents know the

following is true about pneumococcal pneumonia:

    • 85 percent and 91 percent of respondents recognize that

vaccination and hand washing, respectively, can help reduce the

      risk of getting pneumococcal pneumonia.5

  • The survey results also suggest a misperception among respondents when

it comes to ways to reduce the risk of getting pneumococcal pneumonia.

    • For instance, 36 percent think wearing layers can help to reduce

      the risk of pneumococcal pneumonia.5

    • And, a quarter (25 percent) think holding their breath when

someone coughs or sneezes around them can help reduce risk.5

Adults over 50 can visit WhoPneu.com to take a personal risk

assessment for pneumococcal pneumonia, learn more about the disease,

view the video PSA and hear more of Tim’s personal story.

About Pneumococcal Pneumonia

The most common form of bacterial pneumonia, pneumococcal pneumonia is a

serious lung1 disease caused by the Streptococcus

pneumoniae bacteria and is often spread through coughing or

sneezing, and close contact with an infected person.2 Common

symptoms may include difficulty breathing, excessive sweating, and high

fever with shaking and chills, a productive (mucus) cough that persists

or gets worse, and chest pain.1

About the WHO PNEU? Campaign and Survey

The American Lung Association in partnership with Pfizer developed the WHO

PNEU? campaign to educate adults 50 and older about their risk for

pneumococcal pneumonia, a serious lung disease.2 The

campaign’s mission is to raise awareness about personal risk for

pneumococcal pneumonia and encourage adults 50 and older to check with

their doctors to see if they are up to date on their vaccinations.

A national survey was conducted via telephone in the US by Harris Poll

on behalf of the American Lung Association and Pfizer between June 22

and July 8, 2015. The research was conducted among 1000 adults aged 50

to 75. Results were weighted where necessary to bring them into line

with the actual proportion of the population.

Toxic Chemicals in Skin and Hair Care Products

It is important to be careful about the chemicals that are placed on the skin with skin care products and cosmetics. Many skin products and cosmetics have dangerous chemicals as a part of there components. Our skin is not a barrier to these chemicals it acts as a transporter for these chemicals and they can end up in our blood stream and from there to the rest of our body. These chemicals will add to the toxicity of the body and will potentially add to ill health or delay the healing process.

More than 500 ingredients are used to make cosmetics products. We are unsure of the safety for the majority of these chemicals. The most common reactions to the chemicals are eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. However, there is evidence that people who work with these chemicals (such as hairdressers and beauticians) suffer from the cumulative effects of the chemical. The studies concluded that:

  • There is an increased risk of lung, uterine, ovarian, breast, digestive and respiratory cancer.
  • Of the 169 permanent hair dyes, 150 are mutagenic (cause changes to our cells genes).
  • The use of permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes is associated with increased risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma, leukaemia and Hodgkin's disease.

The ingredients that you need to avoid include:

  • Foaming agents including sodium laureth sulphate (SLS), ammonium lauryl sulphate and 1,4-dioxane.
  • Artificial fragrances – many chemicals are able to gain access to our body through our olfactory system or sublingually (under the tongue). In the case of toothpaste a single fragrance can be made up of 200 chemicals which do not have to be labeled. Many fragrances are based on petroleum products and some reactions to these include dizziness, skin irritation and brown tinges to the skin. Products that are fragranced with essential oils are your safest choices.
  • Artificial colors. Things have improved since Queen Elizabeth 1 died from lead poisoning caused by her trademark white make up. However, there are still many questionable colorants. Synthetic colors are made up from coal tar containing heavy metal salts that deposit toxins into our systems.
  • Emulsifiers – these are used in just about all personal grooming products. They keep the texture uniform and stop the ingredients from separating. Eggs can be used for this but skin care companies prefer a more synthetic version. Glyceryl monostearate and stearic acid are two commonly used emulsifiers and oral care products that are known to cause side effects – in particular skin irritations. Another commonly used emulsifier is triethanolamine, a substance that is converted in living tissue into nitrosamines – some of the strongest carcinogens known. Triethanolamine causes skin irritation problems. Ethoxylates is another commonly used emulsifier which is a strongly mutagenic. It damages the DNA which increases skin aging and the risk of developing skin cancers.
  • Preservatives – These are used to slow the rate at which the products decide and therefore increase the products shelf life. Some of these that need to be avoided are:
  • Imidazolidinyl urea – formaldehyde. This is known to cause dermatitis, skin irritation, nerve damage and cancers.
  • Parabens – over 90% of cosmetics contain a conservative from the parabens family. Some of the latest research suggests that these may work as endocrine disruptors. These chemical play a role in increasing the rate of breast cancer and decreasing rates of male fertility.
  • Carrying agents – this is the ingredient that provides all the other ingredients a means to be suspended. Water is the most common carrier agent and some are derived from vegetable glycerine or seaweed. However, it is usually a petroleum derivative.
  • Porpylene glycol is commonly used and there are general warnings about it when it is in contact with the skin. It can cause brain, liver and kidney problems. Yet this is the agent that is commonly used in stick deodorants, toothpaste and most other personal care items!
  • Other ingredients to watch out for are PVP / VA copolymer, stearalkonium chloride, petrolatum and paraffin.

Skin and hair care products are used in an attempt to enhance our appearance or preserve our skin – however this is not what many of the product that are commercially available actually do. Many are far from safe and add to the toxic burden of the body. If you have been using unsafe skin and hair care products (and anyone who uses the usual commercially available products will have) then you need to detoxify your body to remove these toxic chemicals and limit the damage that they can cause.

What’s the Best System For Oily Skin Care?

If you suffer from oily skin, you may wonder what the best way of providing yourself quality oily skin care is. Though there are a lot of oily skincare products that seek to treat oily skin, not all of them will provide you the help you need to treat this very common problem. You have to ask yourself.. is this treatment targeting the symptom, or the cause itself?

Many oily skin care products are designed to address the issue at hand: they clean oils from the skin, but they do nothing to prevent this problem from continuing. Unfortunately, this makes you all the more reliant on products, because as long as you are simply cleaning the oils away, more will be produced, with no medical treatment preventing it.

If you are interested in treating the cause, rather than the symptom, of oily skin, you will need to look into oily skincare products that provide medical help for your skin. These products may operate by providing your skin with the nutrients it needs to function properly, or it may combine a number of active compounds to treat your skin properly.

Ask yourself: Do the oily skin care products you are looking at provide skin treatment as well as simply cleaning effects? Look for compounds that stimulate collagen and elastin growth, that allow for healthier skin that is tougher and more durable than normal. This will result in healthier skin on a more long-term level, rather than simply going dose to dose with other oily skin care products.

Another solution you may consider is a deep active cleansing treatment, that removes toxins and protects from oils over a two week period. Search for one that includes such compounds as kaolin, an extract of New Zealand clay that absorbs oils and cleans grime from the skin. Through this combination of oil-control and dirt and toxin management, these processes can provide you the oily skin care you need over a longer period, ensuring a preventative solution rather than a temporary treatment.

Just because you suffer from oily skin doesn’t mean that you have to also suffer poor products that do not provide the results they promise. Look into getting exactly what you want in a skin care product, to ensure that you will receive exactly the results you are looking for.

Don’t be content to simply wipe oil away. By addressing the fundamental needs that your body has that create these issues, you can work towards more long term solutions today.
