Why Medical Bills In The US Are So Expensive

The American health-care system is in a tug of war between physicians, hospitals, insurance companies, pharmaceuticals and shareholders. At the center of it all are the patients.

Ashley Palmiscino’s insurance company was billed roughly $4 million for her five-month-old son Luca’s lung transplant. Her family had to turn to fundraising almost immediately just to keep up with the medical bills, and she’s not alone. One-third of the money raised on GoFundMe last year went to medical campaigns.

So how did we get here, and how do we turn things around?

“Once there’s all this money sloshing around in a system, there’s this sort of pile-on effect where everyone wants to grab their bit of this huge pot of money,” said Elisabeth Rosenthal, a former physician who wrote a book about how health care became big business.

“Now what we have as we’re trying to take it back and reduce costs is everyone is desperately clinging to their piece of the pie.”

Democrats Can Win In 2020 If They Hit Republicans On Healthcare

There is only one winning campaign issue for 2020 for Democrats: Healthcare. Even though issues like climate change may actually be more dire, the issue of healthcare is one that can unite Democrats and Republicans. Medicare for All is the only solution, and if Democrats continue to hammer Republicans on the issue of healthcare and show how inept that Party is, 2020 will be a cakewalk. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.

You know, if I had thought about it 10 years ago, I would have started either a clock that just counts up one day each day that passes or maybe just started a little thing of tally marks just to keep track of the total number of days that have passed since the Affordable Care Act was passed and Republicans said we are going to repeal and replace this horrible piece of legislation because I would love to know exactly how many days, how many hours, how many minutes have gone by since the Republicans told us they would get us a better healthcare plan only for them to have absolutely no idea what the hell they’re doing. I mean Hell, Donald Trump promised us three, four weeks ago that in two weeks he was going to have a major healthcare announcement, but he never did. Republicans don’t know how to use the issue of healthcare.
They don’t know how to fix healthcare. They don’t know how to tell the public. They’re got to give them something better while providing specifics cause they’ve promised us something better forever. They’ve just never been able to tell us what that better thing is and here’s the point. Right now, healthcare is the biggest issue heading into the 2020 election, not just for president, not just among those candidates, but for every member of Congress and for every member of the Senate, for every candidate, for governor, for everybody running for a state house. Healthcare is the number one issue. It is also one of the most dire issues. I would argue that climate change is a little bit more dire depending on your current situation. I guess that would vary by person. However, climate change unfortunately still does not necessarily energized enough voters, but healthcare will, if Democrats want to win in 2020 not just the presidency but the Senate, the house, governorships, state houses, whatever it is you have to run on healthcare.
It has been proven to be the Achilles heel of the Republican party for nearly 10 years. 10 years is how long these idiots had been telling us they’re going to give us something better than Obamacare. 10 years since they started telling us the Democrats are trying to socialize medicine and now polls show that people actually want that socialized medicine. We would have that had it happened 10 years ago, it didn’t. Affordable Care Act has helped millions of people, not necessarily enough, but it’s helped and we need to build on that by getting rid of it and putting Medicare for All in place. No offense, Obama and Biden, but wasn’t that great of a piece of legislation. It’s time for Medicare, for all prices are skyrocketing on both insurance plans and pharmaceuticals. Obviously Medicare for all is the only option. It is the only way to control those costs and keep people from bankrupt because of medical bills or prevent people from rationing their insulin or choosing whether or not they’re going to eat that day or if they’re going to go fill their antibiotics.

How Canada’s Universal Health-Care System Works

Canada’s health-care system is playing a larger role in America’s political discourse as the 2020 presidential elections heat up. Progressives on the left love pointing to Canada as an equitable and efficient health care system. Conservatives use Canada as an example when warning about the dangers of socialized medicine and unchecked bureaucracy. So how exactly is medicare working in Canada and how does it compare to the United States?

Americans Forced To Flee The Country To Access Affordable Healthcare

The price of prescription drugs and some medical procedures in the United States are reaching obscene levels, and the problem has gotten so bad that Americans are actually having to leave this country just to be able to afford medicines and care. Groups of people are traveling to Canada each month for cheaper prescription drugs, while droves are crossing the Mexican border each day for dental care. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins explains how the problem got so bad and what can be done about it.

About every six months. Donald Trump loves to warn us about a new caravan headed towards the United States. But you know what, there’s actually several different caravans happening on a regular basis that Donald Trump has not warning us about. And those are the caravans of American citizens traveling up to Canada to buy things like insulin because they can’t afford it if they were to buy it here in the United States. You know, a few weeks ago we talked about, uh, the first story when it first popped, a group of American citizens had to head up to Canada to buy insulin because they couldn’t afford it here in the United States because the price has skyrocketed so much. It’s more than doubled since the year 2012 more than doubled versus heading up to Canada to buy a vial, which is one 10th of the cost as it is here in the United States. So rather than not afford this life saving medication that they have to have, they’re packing up and heading to Canada, buying vials of this and coming back home and using it on themselves, using it for their diabetic children.
Or you know, any of the seven and a half million people in this country who have to take insulin for their diabetes. But that’s only part of the story. Another story we told you recently was the fact that you have American citizens along our southern border and even a little further north in that having to cross the border and go into Mexico in order to get dental care. In fact, there’s a couple of towns right along the border there in Mexico. We’re basically, every business is actually a dentist’s office because of the dental tourism that comes from the United States so they can get quality affordable care. So you’ve got tons of Americans heading south of the border to get quality, affordable healthcare and plenty heading north of our border to get quality affordable health care doc. The common thread here, people are having to leave the United States in order to be able to afford medicine and medical procedures.
And the irony there is that Republicans and conservatives have been telling us that if we enact some kind of Medicare for All plan and hell, they told us this, if we enacted Obamacare, it was going to happen. That doctors are going to leave the United States cause it wouldn’t be profitable anymore. Oh, it’s plenty profitable for them. Always has been. Always will be, but it’s actual regular Americans citizens who are having to leave the country to be able to afford care and in what is supposed to be the wealthiest country in the world, the most advanced country in the world. This is 100% unacceptable. It shouldn’t be happening, but it is because we have allowed the pharmaceutical companies, the insurance and the hospital corporations to do it.
Folks. That’s literally the only reason this is happening because we’ve just let them over the years, you know, the first few years of this, maybe it wasn’t so bad I they raised their prices a little bit and we’re okay, but then they start doing it every single year and suddenly this thing that we didn’t think we had to pay attention to as a federal government grew to proportions that now we have to have radical change just in order to fix it.
