The short answer is that light can definitely affect wine, but we need to take a closer look at the physics and chemistry of it all to understand why and how in what is called light-strike reactions, which can impart off-odors to wine, what the French call goût de lumière.
Wine is sensitive to the damaging rays of light, particularly ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight and fluorescent lighting; that’s why wine (and beer) is packaged in dark bottles-the best example is Port in those familiar, dark, opaque bottles. Wines packaged in clear glass bottles are meant for quick consumption and should be stored in carton boxes until such a time.
All forms of radiation, including visible light ultraviolet (UV) rays and X-rays, have energy that is directly proportional to their frequencies or inversely proportional to their wavelengths-that is, high-frequency waves have short wavelengths, and vice versa. And the greater the energy, the greater the catalytic effect of chemical reactions in wine.
Of concern in wine are visible light and the sun’s UVA rays-yes, UVA rays because research has proven that even a short exposure of wine to sun (UVB and UVC are absorbed by the atmosphere), in the order of hours, can have detrimental effects. That’s because UVA rays lie in the 315-400 nanometer (nm) range of the electromagnetic spectrum and therefore has more energy than visible light, which lies in the 400-700 nm range.
Glass acts as a filter, but clear glass offers no protection against UVA and visible light. Green glass offers some protection, but only half as good as amber; dark-amber glass offers almost complete protection. So why is so much wine, particularly many of the ultra-premium wines of the world, packaged in green glass? This is likely for historical reasons when making green-colored glass was easiest and the effect of radiation on wine was unknown.
But glass is only half the story. We must now consider the optical properties of wine to then determine how radiation effects any chemical reaction.
Research has shown that wavelengths in the 375-440 nm range-that is, the high end of the UVA range and the blue (low) end of the visible light range-are most damaging to wine. The amount of radiation absorbed by wine in this range is directly proportional to opacity; therefore, red wine absorbs the most, and is most affected, while white wine absorbs the least-rosé wine is in the middle. As such, for marketing purpose where displaying color is important, white wine can be stored in clear glass, although not for extended periods of time; that’s why premium whites, such as age-worthy Chablis wines come in dead-leaf-colored glass, a golden-yellow color that provides better protection than green.
Opaque, deeply colored, rich reds absorb almost all radiation; however, these have the highest concentration of effect-inhibiting tannins, which provide protection. But if the concentration is low or the extent of exposure is long, unpleasant and off-putting aromas and flavors can develop. Specifically, red wine has sulfur-containing amino acids, namely, containing methionine and cysteine, which have a thiol (sulfur-hydrogen) side chain in their structures. These then react with naturally occurring vitamins, such as riboflavin (vitamin B2) and pantothenic acid (vitamin B5)-water-soluble vitamins that are easily destroyed by heat, oxygen and, that’s right, UV light. The products of this reaction are sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl sulfide (DMS), and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), responsible for imparting a range of foul smells from rotten eggs to cabbage and wet dog.
And now I’m left to wonder if my precious magnum of 1991 Château d’Yquem, in a clear-glass bottle, which I bought for my son born that same year, was affected by X-rays on its travel from the U.S. It was pre-9/11, however, the unyielding airport security guard simply couldn’t be convinced not to X-ray my precious bottle. I guess he was not a fine-wine aficionado.

How Much Zeolite Should I take?
This is a question most people want to know, and of course it is different for each brand and there are so many brands on the market today, but here are some general guidelines you can follow for the 2 most popular types of zeolite, namely zeolite powder and liquid zeolite. If you have questions about other brands, follow the label, but don’t get too stressed. It is impossible to overdose on liquid forms of this supplement, given that there are very small amounts in the bottles.
What do the Scientific Studies on Zeolite Say?
First, according to the scientific studies, the recommended dosage for general maintenance and prevention is 2.5 to 5 grams. In practical terms, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of powdered micronized clinoptilolite will deliver the amount recommended in the scientific literature.

The label states that there are 24 mg per dose, which means there are 2400 mg per bottle. (this is 1/2 the amount, in an entire bottle, than the recommended dosage in the scientific studies. This is why I mentioned it is impossible to take too much of the liquid products.)
In order to get the minimum dosage recommended in the study, one would need to consume one bottle per day, for prevention. The company claims 24 mg 3 times a day is enough, so that would mean the dosage for that liquid product is 3 drops 3 times a day. Some of their distributors claim one needs to take 10 drops 3 times a day for detox, and 15 drops 4 times a day for an acute health issue.
Despite the fact that liquids deliver a much lower dosage, there have been many testimonials on their effectiveness. While testimonials don’t add up to scientific proof, they are powerful in describing how people feel when taking a particular supplement.
What About Other Zeolite Brands?
I recommend that you read labels closely before you buy, to make sure you are getting as close to the dosages recommended in the studies as possible. Since each brand is different, you can now make a decision based on the label.
This will get more confusing as time goes on, and more products hit the market with more ingredients in them. Companies can get away with now saying exactly how much is in the bottle by listing it with other ingredients and calling it a proprietary blend. To ease the burden, parents need to take a greater interest in what their children are doing. Communication is very important between the three parties involved: parents, children and teachers. If parents share the same concerns as their children regarding the amount of homework given, it will help the young ones to realize that there is a sense of justice.
Schools can assist children with homework policies. These policies will set the guidelines with regard to the amount and types of assigned homework. Most school policy guidelines for homework are set at a maximum of twenty to forty minutes for all learning areas.
Homework will never be popular. Children will continue to see it in a bad light. They need to be encouraged constantly so that they will have a positive attitude towards education. Not all herbal remedies you pluck outside your backyard yes, but most herbal products, even those sold commercially, are made with all natural ingredients. These herbal medicines in the form of pills or tablets are guaranteed to contain ingredients which are extracted from the plant itself, or from any of its parts which contain the most essential components.
Since an herbal medicine is made from nature, it is very likely that it will not cause any drastic negative effects on your body. There might be a few pharmaceutical companies though that will mix some synthetic chemicals in the herbal pills but they are added to increase the effect. Otherwise, research before you buy an herbal medicine and make sure it has been approved by the government health agencies.
They give minimal side effects
Most herbal medicines do not give off unwanted side effects because they do not contain harmful chemicals. Instead, as what is stated above, they mostly contain harmless compounds found in nature. Herbal medicines are also less strong as compared to chemical drugs.
There is also less chance that you would develop an allergy reaction to an herbal medicine. Just make sure the herbal medicine you are using is made of one hundred percent natural ingredients and you are safe. However, if allergies have always been a problem no matter what you take in, it is wiser to consult your doctor first before going to the health store.
They cost significantly lower
This is one of the most obvious advantage of using herbal remedies. They are a lot cheaper (and I mean, a lot!) compared to their synthetic and man-made counterparts. The reason why they cost lower is because herbal medicines use natural ingredients and do not have to incorporate chemicals which cost higher than herbs.
Herbal remedies are also very readily available. You can plant a particular medicinal plant in your own garden and backyard so in case you will have to use it, you just have to prepare it in your kitchen. Why, you even saved yourself a trip to the health store!
Their effects may take a while for you to see and feel
However, just like everything else we have in this world, herbal medicines also come with some negative aspects. Regular users of herbal remedies and medicines may have to agree with me on this, that most herbal treatments need a longer time for them to take effect fully. A person who is waiting for an herbal medicine to take its effect must possess great patience!
Then again, this is not because the herb or any of its ingredients are ineffective. They are just as effective but, especially if you bought a hundred percent natural medicine, they do not contain synthetic chemicals that are sometimes added to hasten the effect of the herb.
Some are not safe to use
Just as what I have said earlier, some herbs are not as safe to be taken and used by humans. Some herbs may not have any effect on our health while some may even cause diseases and sickness due to their poison content. Some of the herbs that are toxic and should be taken under professional supervision are borage, calamus, comfrey, chaparral and even the relatively innocent licorice.

Are you tired of those days of the months where you can not zip up your jeans without having to lay down on the bed, breathing in, or jumping up and down to get into one leg? Then you get irritable to top it off? You are not alone. Ninety percent of all women suffer from different degrees of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Marilyn Glenville, PhD, wrote in her book Natural Solutions to PMS that there exists up to 150 possible symptoms that can make you feel terrible and that there are ways to treat some of the most common premenstrual problems.
The idea here is to gain control of your blood sugar by eating small meals regularly. Failure to heed this advice allows your blood-sugar level to decrease and adrenalin levels to increase. The hormone, adrenalin, screws up your normal hormone balance resulting in mood swings. Eliminating caffeine and sugar from your diet will also help prevent irritability. After three menstrual cycles, you will notice a real difference. Keep a stash of health snacks such as nuts, oatcakes, and fresh fruit to minimize your craving for foods that will make you feel worse. Definitely, cut out potato chips and chocolate from your diet.
To combat a mood swing, take a multivitamin containing large amounts of B vitamins. This helps to reduce stress and give you more energy.
You need to stay hydrated. Not taking in enough fluids makes your body retain any existing fluid you have. This results in swelling, which makes it difficult to fit into your clothes. Minimize or eliminate your salt intake in the weeks prior to your menstruation to help reduce PMS bloating. Eat lots of watery foods, and cut down on your caffeine intake because it can dehydrate you thus worsening your problem.
To deal with bloating, drink herbal teas containing natural diuretics like dandelion, watercress, and celery to minimize your body’s water retention.
Maintain your blood sugar. This is tantamount to ensuring there is enough gasoline in your car to keep it going. Eat snacks often so that you do not “crash” in the late afternoon. If you consistently feel fatigue, check with your health care provider to eliminate the possibility of anemia or thyroid disorders.
To help eliminate fatigue, consider taking coenzyme Q10 (coQ10). Coenzyme Q10 helps to release energy by burning fat. It is a great vitaminomimetic (vitamin-like substance) in case PMS causes you to feel excessively sleepy or tired late in the day.
Headaches and breakouts
The liver is responsible for detoxifying all hormones your body makes when you are in the premenstrual mode. When the liver does not function as it should, symptoms manifest themselves in the form of skin breakouts or PMS-related migraines and/or headaches. Do not overwork your liver by drinking alcoholic beverages since alcohol will take priority in the liver’s metabolic functions over the hormones.
To minimize headaches and skin breakouts, consider taking milk thistle which enhances liver function. Zinc supplements are optimal for the skin and general menstrual hormonal imbalances.
Water retention is primarily the cause of breast tenderness. In addition, there is a molecule found in coffee and chocolate called methyl-xanthines that can make the breasts feel very tender and uncomfortable to the touch. Get rid of these from your diet and concentrate on being properly hydrated.
To help get rid of breast tenderness, vitamin E has been shown to be beneficial for premenstrual breast pain and swelling.
Get regular exercise to relieve cramps. The endorphins released are naturally occurring opiates. You do not have to engage in strenuous exercise, but consider doing something mild like yoga or cycling to help increase blood flow to the pelvic area and relieve cramps in the abdomino-pelvic region. Exercise also helps with any vomiting, diarrhea, and/or constipation that are many times associated with menstrual cramps.
For supplemental solutions to cramps, try magnesium to help relax the blood vessels and muscles. Magnesium helps to open up blood vessels and promote blood flow to the pelvic region. A lack of magnesium in the diet can cause blood vessels to become spastic allowing PMS symptoms to get worse.
