Can Light Really Affect My Wine?

The short answer is that light can definitely affect wine, but we need to take a closer look at the physics and chemistry of it all to understand why and how in what is called light-strike reactions, which can impart off-odors to wine, what the French call goût de lumière.

Wine is sensitive to the damaging rays of light, particularly ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight and fluorescent lighting; that’s why wine (and beer) is packaged in dark bottles-the best example is Port in those familiar, dark, opaque bottles. Wines packaged in clear glass bottles are meant for quick consumption and should be stored in carton boxes until such a time.

All forms of radiation, including visible light ultraviolet (UV) rays and X-rays, have energy that is directly proportional to their frequencies or inversely proportional to their wavelengths-that is, high-frequency waves have short wavelengths, and vice versa. And the greater the energy, the greater the catalytic effect of chemical reactions in wine.

Of concern in wine are visible light and the sun’s UVA rays-yes, UVA rays because research has proven that even a short exposure of wine to sun (UVB and UVC are absorbed by the atmosphere), in the order of hours, can have detrimental effects. That’s because UVA rays lie in the 315-400 nanometer (nm) range of the electromagnetic spectrum and therefore has more energy than visible light, which lies in the 400-700 nm range.

Glass acts as a filter, but clear glass offers no protection against UVA and visible light. Green glass offers some protection, but only half as good as amber; dark-amber glass offers almost complete protection. So why is so much wine, particularly many of the ultra-premium wines of the world, packaged in green glass? This is likely for historical reasons when making green-colored glass was easiest and the effect of radiation on wine was unknown.

But glass is only half the story. We must now consider the optical properties of wine to then determine how radiation effects any chemical reaction.

Research has shown that wavelengths in the 375-440 nm range-that is, the high end of the UVA range and the blue (low) end of the visible light range-are most damaging to wine. The amount of radiation absorbed by wine in this range is directly proportional to opacity; therefore, red wine absorbs the most, and is most affected, while white wine absorbs the least-rosé wine is in the middle. As such, for marketing purpose where displaying color is important, white wine can be stored in clear glass, although not for extended periods of time; that’s why premium whites, such as age-worthy Chablis wines come in dead-leaf-colored glass, a golden-yellow color that provides better protection than green.

Opaque, deeply colored, rich reds absorb almost all radiation; however, these have the highest concentration of effect-inhibiting tannins, which provide protection. But if the concentration is low or the extent of exposure is long, unpleasant and off-putting aromas and flavors can develop. Specifically, red wine has sulfur-containing amino acids, namely, containing methionine and cysteine, which have a thiol (sulfur-hydrogen) side chain in their structures. These then react with naturally occurring vitamins, such as riboflavin (vitamin B2) and pantothenic acid (vitamin B5)-water-soluble vitamins that are easily destroyed by heat, oxygen and, that’s right, UV light. The products of this reaction are sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl sulfide (DMS), and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), responsible for imparting a range of foul smells from rotten eggs to cabbage and wet dog.

Interesting science.

And now I’m left to wonder if my precious magnum of 1991 Château d’Yquem, in a clear-glass bottle, which I bought for my son born that same year, was affected by X-rays on its travel from the U.S. It was pre-9/11, however, the unyielding airport security guard simply couldn’t be convinced not to X-ray my precious bottle. I guess he was not a fine-wine aficionado.

List of Values for Kids

A list of values helps parents focus on specific principles they would like to teach their children. Making a list of values for kids may feel overwhelming. Remember that teaching values is something that a child learns throughout his or her lifetime.

Below you will find suggestions to help you make a list of values. Take a look at the example list of values, along with the ideas on how to teach using your own list.

Making a list of Values for Kids

· Take a moment and think about someone you admire.

· As you think of this person, write down attributes you appreciate.

· Next to this list, write the values that are associated with the qualities you admire.

· Talk to friends, families, teachers, and religious leaders. Ask and note what values they try to live by.

· Think of principles or standards that are important to you. Write down those that you would like to instill in your own children.

First write down every idea that comes to you. Later you can edit the list to your top ten or fifteen values to keep it manageable.

Example List of Values for Kids

The following list of values for kids is an example of principles that you might include on your list. These values are not in any particular order.

· Honesty

· Integrity

· Kindness

· Empathy

· Thankfulness

· Curiosity

· Respect

· Imagination

· Hard work

· Perseverance

· Faith

· Friendship

Notice that imagination and curiosity are part of the list for values. Values are not only principles and standards. They are also what we consider important in our lives and would like to pass on to our children. Keep this in mind as you make your own list of values.

Teaching Values with a List

Values are taught by example in the home. Review the values on your list. As you talk with and listen to your child, moments to teach values will present themselves.

Use these moments to help your child know what you think is right in a particular situation. Assist them as they think of ways to put values into action in their everyday lives.

A lesson with the family, teaching a different value from your list each week or month, is an additional way to help your children understand and learn values.

Music can help teach values on your list. Find a song with words that illustrate one of the values on your list. Listen to it in the car or at home. As the child becomes familiar with it, you can begin teaching the words.

As you learn the words together you may ask questions like the following:

· What does this song talk about?

· What is it trying to help us understand?

· What is a situation where you could apply this value?

Keep in mind that learning and teaching values is a life long endeavor. Don’t be discouraged; just be consistent. Live the values you want to teach. Expect and help your children to live them also.

Life Insurance Ratings and What They Mean to You

There are many things to consider before you purchase life insurance such as what your needs are, what is your budget for life insurance and what is the right policy type for your personal situation. Another very important thing to consider is the rating of the company that you purchase your policy from. The past few months have shown many of us that there are a few companies out there that have mishandled their budgets and possibly put some of their policy holders at risk over the long term meaning that the company go bankrupt or insolvent what are the possibilities of Benefits being paid out in the future. It is something we all need to take a look at going forward. While these ratings do not offer a crystal ball look into the future they do help a person make sound decisions based on current and historical information available, which is the best any of us can do to manage risk.

The companies that come up with these ratings, (AM Best, Standard & Poor's, Moody's and Fitch being some of the top names), are independent firms who look at an insurance companies financial strength to come up with their rating of that company. Basically these companies pay financial analyst to determine the strength of the company's balance sheet in an attempt to come up with a strength rating that a consumer can easily easily identify with.

There are multiple rating companies out in the market, each with a slightly different rating scale but the general idea is somewhat like a grading scale you would expect to see in school, A ++ or AAA being the best on down to the lows. It is the middle and low of these scales that differs slightly with each rating system. The different scales and their definitions are available on the web if you want to take a look. In this article we will assume that you will be looking at high ratios for your life insurance needs which means that anything less than an A rating will not do.

After deciding on the other factors that surround the purchase of Life Insurance, deciding on a company that offers the best financial strength should be a strong consideration in determining what company to purchase your Life Insurance Product from. The good news is that many of the Life Insurance quote services have adopted this into their quotes, which makes it more efficient for the consumer. I would offer this as a last step though, with things changing quickly these days we owe it to ourselves to dig a little before making any purchases. Once you settle in on a company do a search of that company or product and see if there is any recent news on it weather it will be positive or negative news, you will have as much or the current information as possible to make a well informed decision.

Zeolite Dosage – How Much Zeolite Should I Take For Health?

How Much Zeolite Should I take?

This is a question most people want to know, and of course it is different for each brand and there are so many brands on the market today, but here are some general guidelines you can follow for the 2 most popular types of zeolite, namely zeolite powder and liquid zeolite. If you have questions about other brands, follow the label, but don’t get too stressed. It is impossible to overdose on liquid forms of this supplement, given that there are very small amounts in the bottles.

What do the Scientific Studies on Zeolite Say?

First, according to the scientific studies, the recommended dosage for general maintenance and prevention is 2.5 to 5 grams. In practical terms, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of powdered micronized clinoptilolite will deliver the amount recommended in the scientific literature.

There have been a number of studies and anecdotal evidence that using this mineral orally could be beneficial in removing heavy metals and toxins, as well as studies in which patients used the powder form as an adjunct to conventional cancer treatments. The big question is, how do the supplements on the market today measure up to the studies?

Zeolite Brands

The popular powdered is cleaned micronized zeolite powder with 5000 mg in one measured teaspoon. That makes it easy doesn’t it? 1 teaspoon a day matches up with what we have learned. For acute health issues, the recommend 1 teaspoon 3 X a day mixed in water or juice should do it.

This company also serves zeolite in capsules. Their encapsulated clinoptilolite products have either 800 or 900 mg per capsule, so in order to get your 2.5-5 grams a day you would take 3-6 capsules.

What about Liquid Zeolite?

Liquid zeolite is a little bit different. There haven’t been any real clinical studies on liquid types, however, popular brands like Original Liquid Zeolite claim their product is simply micronized powdered zeolite which is suspended in water. The label states that there are 24 mg per dose, which means there are 2400 mg per bottle. (this is 1/2 the amount, in an entire bottle, than the recommended dosage in the scientific studies. This is why I mentioned it is impossible to take too much of the liquid products.)

In order to get the minimum dosage recommended in the study, one would need to consume one bottle per day, for prevention. The company claims 24 mg 3 times a day is enough, so that would mean the dosage for that liquid product is 3 drops 3 times a day. Some of their distributors claim one needs to take 10 drops 3 times a day for detox, and 15 drops 4 times a day for an acute health issue.

Despite the fact that liquids deliver a much lower dosage, there have been many testimonials on their effectiveness. While testimonials don’t add up to scientific proof, they are powerful in describing how people feel when taking a particular supplement.

What About Other Zeolite Brands?

I recommend that you read labels closely before you buy, to make sure you are getting as close to the dosages recommended in the studies as possible. Since each brand is different, you can now make a decision based on the label.

This will get more confusing as time goes on, and more products hit the market with more ingredients in them. Companies can get away with now saying exactly how much is in the bottle by listing it with other ingredients and calling it a proprietary blend. Because of this, you should try to get a product that lists the ingredients separately and has only a few ingredients.

Which is Better? Zeolite Powder or Liquid?

I think, from a dosage perspective, it is much easier to get an adequate amount by using a powder product. However, many people find scooping a powder into a glass and mixing it with water to be too messy or time-consuming. For those people, and for children who won’t drink a whole glass of powder dissolved in water, the liquid form has found a great niche.

For everyone else, zeolite powder is proving to be an excellent way to take zeolite every day.

The Burden of Homework

There are many children who realize how important a good education is to secure a decent career. They are the ones who are trying their best to keep up academically. But, they are tired, stressed and frustrated. They are burdened with homework and the demands on their time.

Time is man’s greatest enemy. We live in an information era that is fast paced with things (like technology) that are always changing. While adults manage to organize themselves and cope with the hectic schedules on hand, children are battling to find enough time for schoolwork, sport, recreation and relaxation. And we all know how important and healthy balance is. There are those who will reason that homework doesn’t promote academic achievement. Others believe that homework does more harm than good. In the end one needs to define homework.

1. What is homework? Homework is a supplement to work done in the classroom on the same day.

2. Why is homework important? Homework helps to reinforce concepts, information or skills.

3. How does a student benefit from doing homework? Homework is beneficial because it stimulates the brain. It is also an intellectual discipline and it serves to instill a sense of responsibility.

Homework is not the problem. Teachers often give homework to keep children busy. They give homework to punish their students. Sometimes homework is given because time in class is not enough to do all the work assigned. There are times that children sit at home with work that has never been explained or discussed in class.

Teachers should categorize homework. Homework is important in three ways: for the purpose of

  • preparation for the next lesson;
  • practicing new skills; and
  • understanding concepts and information through additional information.

Homework should never take up too much time. Let’s take the example of ten minutes per learning area, per afternoon. For children who have fourteen learning areas, this in effect would mean that time set aside every afternoon for homework is two hours and twenty minutes. On the other hand, if children spend an hour doing mathematics homework, where would they find the time, energy or optimism to do the homework assigned for their other thirteen subjects? Official school hours differ from one country to the next. Let’s say they average between five to six hours per day. With a two hour homework schedule, children would be spending seven to eight hours per day academically.

To ease the burden, parents need to take a greater interest in what their children are doing. Communication is very important between the three parties involved: parents, children and teachers. If parents share the same concerns as their children regarding the amount of homework given, it will help the young ones to realize that there is a sense of justice.

Schools can assist children with homework policies. These policies will set the guidelines with regard to the amount and types of assigned homework. Most school policy guidelines for homework are set at a maximum of twenty to forty minutes for all learning areas.

Homework will never be popular. Children will continue to see it in a bad light. They need to be encouraged constantly so that they will have a positive attitude towards education. Children are our future. We need to put them first, because a negative and uneducated future can only be detrimental to society on the whole.

Peeling Penis Skin – 7 Potential Causes

Dry, peeling penis skin can send any man into a state of panic, especially when there is no obvious cause. Flakes of skin falling away from the Johnson are not only unattractive, they can appear as a sign of poor health, not to mention causing serious discomfort.

Fortunately, in most cases, the underlying issue can be easily addressed. With the right treatment and a good understanding of proper penis care, the problem can be banished in a matter of days, leaving the skin soft, smooth and attractive.

Common causes of flaking, peeling penis skin

  • Friction. Dry masturbation or sex is a leading cause of peeling, stressed skin. Using a personal lubricant (one designed for the purpose) can reduce the occurrence of dryness and irritation of the penis.
  • Yeast infection. Candida yeast infections, also known as thrush, are one of the most common causes of peeling, itchy penis skin. Other symptoms of yeast infection include red bumps or sores, a burning sensation during urination, severe itching, and a whitish, lumpy discharge. Most yeast infections can be treated with topical anti-fungal creams. Although not considered a sexually transmitted infection, Candida is highly contagious and can easily be passed from one partner to another, so men who develop a yeast infection should encourage their partners to be treated, as well.
  • Balanitis. This condition refers to any inflammation of the glans – or head – of the penis. The inflammation may be related to yeast infection or poor hygiene. Keeping the area clean is essential, especially for men who are uncircumcised, and topical creams may be used to treat the pain, itching and flaking caused by the infection.
  • Phimosis. Men or boys who are unable to retract the foreskin may be diagnosed with phimosis. The tight foreskin may develop a dry appearance, especially if it is stretched during an erection or as a result of masturbation or sex. Phimosis can often be treated by gently pulling the foreskin back a little at a time; applying a high-quality moisturizer can be of assistance in this process. In some cases, doctors may recommend circumcision as the best solution.
  • Sexually transmitted infections. Certain communicable diseases can cause dry penis skin that flakes and peels. Men who are sexually active should be tested for STIs on a regular basis and follow through with any recommended treatment.
  • Dermatitis. A skin sensitivity to something in a man’s environment – from laundry detergent to fragrances to latex condoms or spermicides – can cause the skin to become irritated, itchy, and dry. Avoiding potential skin irritants can eliminate this problem, and using a soothing vitamin cream when irritation does occur can help to clear up any issues.
  • Psoriasis or eczema. Men who have psoriasis or eczema elsewhere on their bodies may also develop dry, scaly or red patches of skin on the penis. Vitamins A and E are often used as natural solutions for these issues; hydrocortisone creams are also frequently prescribed, but caution is advised in this case, as steroid creams can cause thinning of the delicate penile skin.

Any unusual penis symptoms are best tended to by a doctor who has experience in men’s issues, especially if the owner of the package is not sure what is causing the problem. In some cases, such as communicable diseases, prescription medications may be required to clear up the problem.

Dry penis skin should be allowed time to heal; abstaining from sex until the cause of the issue has been identified can prevent further damage and discomfort. In addition, applying a penis health creme (most health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil) containing penis-specific nutrients such as vitamins A and E can help to nourish the skin and speed the healing process. A good penis cream containing natural moisturizers such as Shea butter is ideal for even the most sensitive skin; applying the cream after a shower is best, as this allows for rapid absorption for maximum benefit.

How to Give Her Thigh-Shaking Orgasms (Tonight!)

Do you want to make your woman explode with orgasmic delight? Well, to be honest I am a little frustrated at how many men are completely clueless in the bedroom. They seem to think their ability to please women lies in the size of their penis. This is absolutely not true. Instead, it just takes a little effort to learn some proven methods – but most guys hate putting in that effort!

How to Give Her Thigh-Shaking Orgasms (Tonight!)

Stack Her Orgasms

This should be the corner stone of every man’s routine in the bedroom. What this does is get a woman to the point where she experiences a blended orgasm (an orgasm which originated from the clitoris and g-spot simultaneously) every 5-10 minutes. In other words, if this is done right, you’ll be able to give her as many orgasms as you want during sex – or until she passes out from all the pleasure!

Missionary with a Twist

When it comes to sex positions, this is probably my favorite. Get in the normal missionary position and then put her legs over your shoulders. Simply elevate her bottom off of the bed, and give her slow and powerful thrusts. What this elevation does is ensure you hit the g-spot each time. Try it out and I can guarantee she won’t be able to get enough!

Longer is Better

If you are going to stack her orgasms, then you’ll probably launch to the top of her list of lovers. But what will keep you up there is your sexual stamina. Since she will be experiencing an amazing orgasm every 5-10 minutes, you will need to be able to last as long as she wants. For some women, a couple of these strong orgasms is enough, but other may want more than 4 or 5!

Fast Food and Traditional Food

The term “cooking” includes a wide range of methods, tools and combination of ingredients to create the flavor and digestibility of food. Cooking technique, known as culinary art, generally requires the selection, measurement and combining of ingredients in a controlled procedure in an effort to achieve the desired result. Constraints on success include the variability of ingredients, ambient conditions, tools, and the skill of the individual cooking. The diversity of cooking worldwide is a reflection of many nutritional, artistic, agricultural, economic, cultural and religious considerations that impact upon it. Cooking requires applying heat to a food which usually chemically transforms it and changing its flavor, texture, appearance, and nutritional properties. There is archaeological evidence that the primitive human being used to cook their food with fire that was the most important thing discovered by the primitive human being. Cooking food and cuisine culture vary from country to country and from one culture to another and each cuisine has its specific particularity. Nowadays, because of the modern life that changes everything around us and influence our life style and eating habits, people are less preparing their own food. Eating habits tend to unify people from different society. The food production and the process of eating obtain new characteristics. Food available around us seems to be very different from the one that we used to eat.

Eating habits and modern life

Everything is running in high speed, people do not have time for cooking, don`t has the desire and patience to stay longer in the kitchen, and they don`t have the willing to prepare their own food. Old generation still prefer to cook their own food unlike young people who prefer to eat fast food because they don’t want to spend long time cooking and the desire for the cooking. The modern life shapes our eating habits and makes us like slave following its speed. It`s not hard to find fast food restaurant they are everywhere and every corner. Fast food consumption cause damages to the social and economic life of the country and leads to many health problems such as obesity and heart diseases according to many studies. Also, many nutrition experts from different countries have already declared the epidemic character of fast food. The rapid process of globalization and modern life influence our eating’s habits and gives opportunity to fast food restaurants to grow and flourish. Fast food seems to become very common everywhere, though some positive aspect of the fast food in easy to prepare, available in many places, and it is a substantial meal. But in other hand, we can estimate that its negative aspects are more important and bigger. I think it is easy to understand that fast food is one of phenomenon that is going to be accepted by people. We are going to see the process of disappearance of the traditional culture with the development of fast food restaurants in all countries all over the world.

How to fight fast food addiction

The best example of the fast food success to change the modern life is the invasion of the world’s food market by the giant fast food company such as McDonald, KFC and others. According to McDonald`s web site, McDonald has about 29.000 restaurants in 120 countries all over the world, and serves nearly 54 million customers each day. As well as it indicates the fact of such changing in eating preferences and even in the way of life itself. There is no doubt that right now fast food changes the face of many nations and eating habits around the world. To sum up, unfortunately, it is hard to prevent these global changes that traditional food is going to be replaced by new foods that common for all people in all countries all over the world. But the good news is that, recently there are some people and some movements which try to contrast the process of modern life and ask people to go back to their traditional food. To solve this problem we need restaurants that offers traditional food, and able to attract large amount of faithful customers. Also parents must teach their children how to prepare and cook the traditional food. Many People figure out that traditional food is much better for our health, so they want to preserve and keep the cooking tradition from evaporating. There is enormous hope of people to preserve their food preparation customs and tradition. The major obstacles are the modern life style. Some people might say that it is difficult to preserve our traditional food because it takes a long time to prepare and people today can not spend a long time in cooking. Other people, especially older people might say that, it is unfortunate to destroy culture and tradition. Those people might be right.

Conclusion

In these days, people have more health problems that are related with the new eating habits and fast food consumption. Despite some advantages of fast food the harm caused by fast food does not outweigh its benefit. I think that people should consider the negative fact of fast food consumption and the benefits of preparing their own food at home. It`s unfair that the traditional food which arrive to us from generation to generation we are going to replace it with junk food that will harm us more than benefit us. It`s unfortunate to lose the cooking tradition and eating homemade food prepared by our mothers together around the table. I am sure that all of us must think over this problem and try to find the appropriate solution to save our cultures, our traditional foods, and more importantly our health. So we should take action immediately to preserve traditional food and encourage people to prepare their own dishes, so they can stay healthy and live longer. Even though fast food is cheap, convenient, yummy and available in every corner in our cities, but that does not mean that our health is cheaper than the fast food that we eat.

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Herbal Remedies?

Herbal remedies are fast becoming popular even in our generation where everything seems to be governed by science. Herbal remedies or herbal medicine can be the first thing we try whenever we notice something wrong with our system, such as cough and colds. There are also times when we use herbs as our last resort, for example after we haven taken too many fat-burning pills.

We also use different herbal remedies for more serious ailments from ulcer and kidney stones to reproductive problems and even as a cure for cancer. Some doctors even encourage the use of herbal medicines – medically tested herbal medicines that is. Not all herbal remedies are advantageous and beneficial to our health. Some have no effect at all, while some may even cause greater damage.

It is better if you consult your doctor first before you randomly pluck leaves out of your backyard and brew it into tea. As I have said, some may not help you improve your health and may even get you sick. There are also a lot of herbal plants which are not safe for human beings to use. Anyway, in this article, we will list down the advantages and disadvantages of using herbal medicines or remedies.

Advantages

They have all-natural ingredients

Not all herbal remedies you pluck outside your backyard yes, but most herbal products, even those sold commercially, are made with all natural ingredients. These herbal medicines in the form of pills or tablets are guaranteed to contain ingredients which are extracted from the plant itself, or from any of its parts which contain the most essential components.

Since an herbal medicine is made from nature, it is very likely that it will not cause any drastic negative effects on your body. There might be a few pharmaceutical companies though that will mix some synthetic chemicals in the herbal pills but they are added to increase the effect. Otherwise, research before you buy an herbal medicine and make sure it has been approved by the government health agencies.

They give minimal side effects

Most herbal medicines do not give off unwanted side effects because they do not contain harmful chemicals. Instead, as what is stated above, they mostly contain harmless compounds found in nature. Herbal medicines are also less strong as compared to chemical drugs.

There is also less chance that you would develop an allergy reaction to an herbal medicine. Just make sure the herbal medicine you are using is made of one hundred percent natural ingredients and you are safe. However, if allergies have always been a problem no matter what you take in, it is wiser to consult your doctor first before going to the health store.

They cost significantly lower

This is one of the most obvious advantage of using herbal remedies. They are a lot cheaper (and I mean, a lot!) compared to their synthetic and man-made counterparts. The reason why they cost lower is because herbal medicines use natural ingredients and do not have to incorporate chemicals which cost higher than herbs.

Herbal remedies are also very readily available. You can plant a particular medicinal plant in your own garden and backyard so in case you will have to use it, you just have to prepare it in your kitchen. Why, you even saved yourself a trip to the health store!

Disadvantages

Their effects may take a while for you to see and feel

However, just like everything else we have in this world, herbal medicines also come with some negative aspects. Regular users of herbal remedies and medicines may have to agree with me on this, that most herbal treatments need a longer time for them to take effect fully. A person who is waiting for an herbal medicine to take its effect must possess great patience!

Then again, this is not because the herb or any of its ingredients are ineffective. They are just as effective but, especially if you bought a hundred percent natural medicine, they do not contain synthetic chemicals that are sometimes added to hasten the effect of the herb.

Some are not safe to use

Just as what I have said earlier, some herbs are not as safe to be taken and used by humans. Some herbs may not have any effect on our health while some may even cause diseases and sickness due to their poison content. Some of the herbs that are toxic and should be taken under professional supervision are borage, calamus, comfrey, chaparral and even the relatively innocent licorice.

Women’s Health Solutions to Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Are you tired of those days of the months where you can not zip up your jeans without having to lay down on the bed, breathing in, or jumping up and down to get into one leg? Then you get irritable to top it off? You are not alone. Ninety percent of all women suffer from different degrees of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Marilyn Glenville, PhD, wrote in her book Natural Solutions to PMS that there exists up to 150 possible symptoms that can make you feel terrible and that there are ways to treat some of the most common premenstrual problems.

  • Mood Swings
The idea here is to gain control of your blood sugar by eating small meals regularly. Failure to heed this advice allows your blood-sugar level to decrease and adrenalin levels to increase. The hormone, adrenalin, screws up your normal hormone balance resulting in mood swings. Eliminating caffeine and sugar from your diet will also help prevent irritability. After three menstrual cycles, you will notice a real difference. Keep a stash of health snacks such as nuts, oatcakes, and fresh fruit to minimize your craving for foods that will make you feel worse. Definitely, cut out potato chips and chocolate from your diet.

To combat a mood swing, take a multivitamin containing large amounts of B vitamins. This helps to reduce stress and give you more energy.

  • Bloating
You need to stay hydrated. Not taking in enough fluids makes your body retain any existing fluid you have. This results in swelling, which makes it difficult to fit into your clothes. Minimize or eliminate your salt intake in the weeks prior to your menstruation to help reduce PMS bloating. Eat lots of watery foods, and cut down on your caffeine intake because it can dehydrate you thus worsening your problem.

To deal with bloating, drink herbal teas containing natural diuretics like dandelion, watercress, and celery to minimize your body’s water retention.

  • Fatigue
Maintain your blood sugar. This is tantamount to ensuring there is enough gasoline in your car to keep it going. Eat snacks often so that you do not “crash” in the late afternoon. If you consistently feel fatigue, check with your health care provider to eliminate the possibility of anemia or thyroid disorders.

To help eliminate fatigue, consider taking coenzyme Q10 (coQ10). Coenzyme Q10 helps to release energy by burning fat. It is a great vitaminomimetic (vitamin-like substance) in case PMS causes you to feel excessively sleepy or tired late in the day.

  • Headaches and breakouts
The liver is responsible for detoxifying all hormones your body makes when you are in the premenstrual mode. When the liver does not function as it should, symptoms manifest themselves in the form of skin breakouts or PMS-related migraines and/or headaches. Do not overwork your liver by drinking alcoholic beverages since alcohol will take priority in the liver’s metabolic functions over the hormones.

To minimize headaches and skin breakouts, consider taking milk thistle which enhances liver function. Zinc supplements are optimal for the skin and general menstrual hormonal imbalances.

  • Breast tenderness
Water retention is primarily the cause of breast tenderness. In addition, there is a molecule found in coffee and chocolate called methyl-xanthines that can make the breasts feel very tender and uncomfortable to the touch. Get rid of these from your diet and concentrate on being properly hydrated.

To help get rid of breast tenderness, vitamin E has been shown to be beneficial for premenstrual breast pain and swelling.

  • Cramps
Get regular exercise to relieve cramps. The endorphins released are naturally occurring opiates. You do not have to engage in strenuous exercise, but consider doing something mild like yoga or cycling to help increase blood flow to the pelvic area and relieve cramps in the abdomino-pelvic region. Exercise also helps with any vomiting, diarrhea, and/or constipation that are many times associated with menstrual cramps.

For supplemental solutions to cramps, try magnesium to help relax the blood vessels and muscles. Magnesium helps to open up blood vessels and promote blood flow to the pelvic region. A lack of magnesium in the diet can cause blood vessels to become spastic allowing PMS symptoms to get worse.
